This course will help prepare students for the National State Exam. As a certified EKG technician, you will operate machines that record the electrical activity of a patients heart. EKG rhythms provide important data for the diagnosis of heart conditions. As a CET, you may perform some or all the following tasks. 1.) Set up and administer EKGs, stress tests 2.) Prepare patients for Holter, or ambulatory monitoring 3.) Program Information This 50-hour program will prepare you to become an EKG technician, which involves monitoring and recording electrical impulses transmitted by the heart. The course includes hands-on labs and practice with EKG equipment, and prepares you to take the ASPT-Electrocardiograph Technician Exam and other National Certification Exams. This course includes important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography, and stress testing. Additionally, you will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands-on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine and other clinical practices. After the successful completion of this program you will be prepared to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) EKG Technician Certification (CET). You will learn the following: 1.) Role of the EKG Technician 2.) Function of the EKG Department in a variety of settings (hospital, clinic, office, mobile service) 3.) Medical terminology related to electrocardiography 4.) Care and safety of patients including medical and legal aspects of patient care 5.) Anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system 6.) Electrocardiography, the conduction system of the hear, and the cardiac cycle. 7.) Circulation of blood through the heart and vessels. 8.) Lead placement for 12-lead electrocardiography 9.) Basic EKG interpretation of normal rhythms and arrhythmias 10.) EKG troubleshooting including recognizing artifacts 11.) Waves and measurements 12.) EKG strip analysis (P, Q, R, S, T wave-form interpretation) 13.) Identification of rhythms using the 12-lead EKG 14.) Pacemakers 15.) Holter monitoring and the echocardiogram

Intended Audience: Entry level program geared towards individuals interested in becoming a certified EKG Technician and or interested in working in the healthcare industry. Others that attend are Medical Assistants, Phlebotomists and EMTs persuing a career as an ER Technician, individuals interested in careers as EKG Technicians and others interested in healthcare careers.
Prerequisite: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Certificate Requirements: (Attend and successfully complete each module) The EKG Technician Certificate Program includes a graded final exam to help prepare students for the ASPT- EKG Technician Exam. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the program.
Career Information According to the Social Security Administration, an average yearly salary for an EKG technician in the United States is about $40,722. The annual salary for the highest 10 percent EKG technicians is more than $79,290 while the lowest 10 percent recieved less than $27,430 and the median 50% earned a yearly salary of about $51,020 per year. Source *U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics quote the average yearly salary for an EKG technician is about $52,160. Hourly wage for a newly certified EKG technician in the USA is about $9.73-$17.51 and will gradually increase from $5.18 - $25.75 overtime. EKG Technicians work in physician offices, hospitals, clinics, and other health care facilities and organizations. EKG Technicians also work for insurance companies to establish health and life insurance policies.
