Phlebotomy Technician Program

Phlebotomy Technician Program:

The Phlebotomy Technician program is offered with a duration of (15) night classes, 4-hours per night in Turlock, a total of 58-hours; plus an externship with minimum 40-hours to meet state requirements. This program provides education for individuals seeking a career in the laboratory as a California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT I). The mission of the Phlebotomy Technician Program is to graduate highly qualified professional and compassionate Phlebotomy Technicians. The primary goal of the Phlebotomy Technician Program is to education students with didactic, laboratory, clinical experiences that encompass emerging and innovative technologies in the preparation for a health care career as a Phlebotomist Technician. The Phlebotomist duties: taking patient histories, preparing puncture sites, drawing blood by way of venipuncture, and preparing fluid samples for laboratory testing. This training meets the California Department of Public Health requirements for eligibility to take the Phlebotomy Technician Certification Examination.

Enrollment Fee:
To enroll in the program a non-refundable fee of $250.00 is due at time of enrollment into the program. If student chooses to cancel their enrollment the fee will not be refunded (no exceptions). The remainder cost $3,375.00 (covers all the following: Tuition, 1 set scrubs/ID, workbook and lab materials. The following fees are not included: Program book: Phlebotomy Essentials, 8th edition by Ruth E. McCall , national exam fee for certification, site test fee, externship fee, state licensing fee/ live Scan). Wait List Policy- Students that enroll on the wait list will be provided a refund option of $225.00 or guaranteed placement into next program only if they attend orientation and are not accepted off the wait list, otherwise the fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.

(40 hours) - Externship
EXTERNSHIP PLACEMENT IS PROVIDED BY THE SCHOOL. Student must attend basic lab practice after passing the National Exam until externship placement date is provided. Basic Labs are scheduled by appointment with the office on Wednesdays with a license CPT-1 Instructor.

To meet Phlebotomy Program course completion requirements, student must complete a total of (40) hours externship time scheduled and approved by school. Each student must meet the minimal California requirements for the clinical portion of the phlebotomy course. Externship placement is scheduled by the Admissions office once student successfully completes the didactic portion of the program, passes the National Exam and completes a current skills lab verification form after didactic. Students that get placed for an externship will be charged an externship clearance fee of $450.00 (Effective 8/2019). Fee is due at the time of confirmed externship date.
Students must successful performance the minimum during externship:
- 40 hours minimum noted and signed by externship preceptor.
- Evaluations completed and signed
- Puncture Log (50 venipunctures, 10 skin punctures and 2 arterial draw observations).
Note- Covid-19 vaccination is not required. The covid-19 vaccine dose 1, dose 2, booster if eligible (5 months from last dose) is not required; exemption form is acceptable. There are no delays will externship placements. Each student is provided one placement selected by the school, an externship clearance fee applies.

Course Completion Certificate:
Upon successfully completing the Phlebotomy Technician Program (58) hours Didactic and (40) hours externship, student will be eligible to take the National CPT-1 Exam to become certified. National Exam will be available at our Turlock Campus, additional fees apply. National Exam fee is $109 online and $114.95 paper version proctored at our Turlock Site, test site fee $50.00 applies.

Student Eligibility:
The program is open to the general public for admission, student must have a high school diploma and 18-years of age, Valid Identification Card, Social Security Card. A Healthcare Provider (AHA) BLS class session is no longer included in the course cost effective 2021 programs, class is offered at a $15.00 discounted (ECC2020 Guidelines). All enrolled students are required to attend an orientation must schedule with admissions office (209) 250-1200. Students must provide the following records:
1.) High School Diploma or equivalent
2.) Valid US Identification, Social Security Card
3.) Proof of immunizations much be provided during course with copy of your healthcare insurance card (or declination form), must include records or titers for: 3- Hep B shots, 2 MMR shots, 2 varicella shots and Tdap within 10 years.
4.) Provide two negative TB's one within a year and the 2nd within 90 days of program; or chest X-ray with negative results (QuintiFERON TB Gold blood test is an alternative to skin tests or X-ray)- Must be current the duration of program through externship dates.
5.) Negative 10-panel drug test within (30) days from start date and second test within (15) days of externship start date.

7.) Physical exam with release to participate in program documented on form provided by school. Physical requirements: Lift light to moderately heavy objects. The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects. Objects in the weight range of 1 to 15 pounds are lifted and carried frequently; objects in the weight range of 16 to 25 points are lifted and carried occasionally and objects in the weight range of 26 to 40 pounds are seldom lifted and carried. Objects exceeding 41 pounds are not to be lifted or carried without assistance. Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time; requires long hours of eye and hand coordination. Talking, walking, balancing, bending/kneeling, pushing/pulling, reaching and twisting. Student will be required to travel to an externship site. 9.) Covid-19 Vaccination: First Lady Permanente does NOT require the covid vaccination to attend the didactic portion/ lab practice of the program. The covid-19 vaccine dose 1, dose 2, booster if eligible (5 months from last dose) is optional; exemption form is acceptable.

Attendance:
Students must attend all scheduled program hours. If a student is sick and unable to attend program hours, a Doctors note will waive up to (8) hours at no additional fees, however time must be made up per state program guidelines. Student must attend first day of program, otherwise they forfeit their spot in the program and the enrollment fee is non-refundable and the orientation fee is non-refundable. Externship Clearance Attendance: After didactic completion, students must attend basic lab practice/ and or advanced lab practice in order to be cleared for an externship date. Students that do not attend lab practice will not be given an externship date, and students that do not attend for a 3-month consecutive period will forfeit externship opportunity with school and will be documented as a withdrawal effective last date of lab attendance. Externship must be completed by student within 12-months of didactic completion date.

Payment Plan:
Students have the option to go on a weekly payment plan the duration of the program, payments are due first day of the week per program - processed by the Administrative Department prior to 6:00pm. Cash payments must be submitted to the Admissions Office during business hours Tuesday - Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm by due date (An appointment is required, no walk-ins). Late fees apply to accounts that fall behind. Orientation fee of $675.00 is non-refundable and non-transferable.

Refund/Cancellation Policy:
The enrollment fee of $250.00 is non-refundable and non-transferable. Do not submit payment if you are not sure you want to take this program. An initial enrollment payment that is more than $250.00 will be charged a 4% processing fee of the net amount being refunded to payment used. Questions email [email protected]

Textbook Restocking Fee:
Textbooks that have been purchased may be returnable (only in new condition) and must be returned to the admissions office no later than 5 days after the program start date. A 30% restocking/ processing fee will be applied and deducted from the net amount being refunded to payment used.
